Our Story

A Lifetime of Auction Experience

Stephen’s journey started nearly 50 years ago at Swaffham Auction Market as a very young ticket runner for his auctioneer father. Having worked his way up through most of the portering and other auction duties, he took to the rostrum in 1981, at the tender age of 14. At the time he was believed to be the youngest auctioneer in the country, and featured in a broadcast that year by BBC Look East.

In 1989, with the retirement of Noel Abel, who ran the weekly auctions here in Watton from 1956, Stephen seized the opportunity to establish his own Salerooms along with his wife Barbara. These sales were initially run from an ex-MOD building on the old camp which was originally part of RAF Watton.

In 2004 the business moved into the purpose built Salerooms and Yard from where it still operates today. Auctions are held every Tuesday throughout the year and typically comprise 1400 to 1600 lots each week.

Looking to the future, with an increasing focus on re-using and recycling, and the need to take care of our planet, Stephen & Barbara look forward to welcoming you to the Salerooms for the next part of the journey.
